How to make a safe piñata.
Instructions
- Blow up a big normal balloon.
- Prepare the "paper maché mix".
This can be made by mixing flour and boiling
water together in a mixing bowl to form a paste.
- Put strips all around the balloon, both vertically and horizontally with the mix and then lay them across the balloon.
Make sure you cover the balloon completely. Remember to leave the area clear at the knotted end of the balloon. Let the first layer
dry, it is ready when it feels hard, before adding the next layer.
Add another two layers.
- You will need strings to hang up the piñata. To do so, tie a piece of string over the top and to both sides
of the balloon. The string should be longer than the balloon. Tie another long
piece of string over the balloon in a similar manner, but at right angles to the first piece of string.

- Cover the strings with newspaper strips.
- It should
be dried completely before proceeding to the next step. It will be ready when it feels very light and hard.
- Pop
the balloon through the hole at the base and gently pull it out. Paint
and decorate the piñata as you like.
- Fill the piñata with candies and other
goodies. Close the hole with masking tape and hang it with a
rope or cord.
The piñata is finally ready.
Traditionally, the person swinging at the piñata is blindfolded and is spun 33 times before hitting
the piñata. Safety is of outmost importance; especially, with younger kids. Remember to keep a safe distance
from the hitting area.
